Piddington, Buckinghamshire c1912

Another WHA postcard of a Buckinghamshire pub. Piddington is very near to West Wycombe. It is also very near Bradenham featured in yesterday's postcard. The pub is still there and is still called the Dashwood Arms. It looks like (November 2010) it has recently changed hands. Click the link for a view of Dashwood Hill today.

Hounslow, Whitton Road c1905

The pub on the right has survived. The pub on the left has gone. If anyone knows the name of the pub on the left please let me know. Postcard by Hutchinsons of Wimbledon.

Update - March 6th 2011 - I think the pub on the left was called the Eagle Tavern and the pub on the right was called the Railway Hotel (it is now called the Shire Horse). Please contact me if you can either confirm or deny this.

Larger postcard preview images and embedded Google Streetview

From now on, all posts will feature a larger postcard preview image and the Google Streetview will be embedded into this page. You can click the 'View Larger Map' link to see it bigger. I recommend you open it in a new tab if doing this. As before, clicking on the postcard will bring up a much larger version. I shall gradually work my way through the old posts and use embedded Streetview on all of them. I am also gradually converting the older postcard images from 150dpi to bigger 200dpi images. Any comments or suggestions welcome.

Fleet, Hampshire, Fleet Road c1912

Fleet Road today. It is a pity that the building on the left has lost its ornamentation. There is a metal star at the top of the building and underneath it writing that says 'The Risen Sun'.

Epsom, Junction of Hook Road and East Street c1913

These two photos of Epsom were taken one after the other, possibly from the same spot. The cinema was called 'Epsom Electric Theatre'. In the Hook Road postcard notice also the school children looking over the wall and the gasometer in the distance. Both postcards were published by W. H. Applebee of Ashford. There will be a different Epsom cinema postcard in tomorrow's blog post.

Wandsworth, Fairfield Street 1906

This postcard by Young & Co of Teddington features a horse-drawn tram. The street appears to have previously been called North Street.

Fairfield Street Wandsworth today. Difficult to pinpoint any landmarks with the old postcard. The card was sent as a birthday card from a resident of Tonsley Place (on the left) to her husband, a postman.

Clewer is near Windsor. When this postcard was produced it appears that the road hadn't got a proper name yet. The houses on the left are now shops.

Mortlake, Cromwell Lane c1905

Old Cromwell House and Cromwell Lane were demolished when Mortlake Brewery expanded. The gates were retained and moved 40 metres to the west in Williams Lane. The gates now look dilapidated. The brewery is now defunct. There is a web page about Cromwell House at the Barnes and Mortlake History Society. The Cromwell Lane postcard below is wonderfully evocative and is one of my favourite postcards.

Cheapside, City of London c1910

The first view is looking east. The statue on the left is that of Sir Robert Peel which was later moved to Hendon Police College. On the far right is the site of what is now the recently opened (October 2010) One New Change shopping centre.

The Google Streetview of Cheapside looking east shows the building of the shopping centre in progress:

The postcard below shows Cheapside looking west. The building on the far left is the old Mappin and Webb building, now replaced by No 1 Poultry. The church shown in both postcards is the famous St Mary-le-Bow which houses the equally famous Bow Bells.
