High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Frogmore Fountain c1912

High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Frogmore Fountain circa 1912. This fountain was apparently scrapped to provide metal for the war effort in the 1940s. It's a shame because it was quite magnificent. The square looks very ordinary without it. This postcard was published by W. H Applebee.

Here's an earlier view from a different angle on a postcard by Young & Co. For more old photographs please visit Sepia Saturday.

  1. You're right, the square needs that magnificent fountain. I wonder if there have ever been any efforts to rebuild it.

    1. I had heard that it never got scrapped, and ended up being erected in a different town after the war.

  2. Its sad to think that the fountain and so many other things were destroyed to use in the war.

  3. How right you are about how the square looks lost without its fountain. Even if you had never seen a photograph of the original fountain, you would still feel that something was missing

  4. It's almost the topic for a song - the square with the lost fountain, isn't it?

  5. What a shame it had to be used in that way. The square needs a special focal point like that. Intricate metal work.

  6. Ditto about the fountain, still it was a need of the times. Interesting contrasts of with and without..

  7. It was very pretty, and too bad that they needed the metal that badly. But I guess sometimes you gotta do what you gotta due. Thanks for sharing, I enjoy your post very much.

    Happy Sepia Saturday,

  9. Could the fountain have been made from the melted cannon of an earlier war?
