Bracknell, Berkshire, Station Road c1912

Bracknell, Berkshire, Station Road circa 1912. The building on the left, Station Hotel, is thankfully still there. It is now called The Goose. The buildings in the middle have long since gone. The building in front of the chimney has a sign on the window that says 'Fuller, Story & Co, Order Office' which would indicate that it was a subsidiary of the main Fuller, Story & Co brewers in Maidenhead. This postcard is unusual in that the modern Street View scene is busier than the old postcard. Postcard by W. H. Applebee of Ashford. Click the postcard to enlarge.

Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, The Red Lion c1907

Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, The Red Lion c1907. The Red Lion is a Grade II listed building built in the seventeenth century or earlier. The village of Hinxton is the home of the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus.
The postcard was published by an uncredited publisher and posted in September 1907. The sender, Daisy Violet Martin, identifies one of the people in the picture as Willie Tarbit. The original postcard was very faded so I've had to enhance it. Click the postcard to enlarge. For more old photographs have a look at this week's Sepia Saturday blog.

Edit - I've added a scan of the back. It is tempting to speculate that the girl sitting on the fence on the left of the postcard is the sender, Daisy Violet Martin. We will never know...

Edit II - Research by Lisa B shows that Willie Tarbitt died shortly before this postcard was sent - see comments below. We think he may have been the boy with the bicycle.

Wembley, Middlesex, Presbyterian Church, c1911

Wembley, Middlesex, Presbyterian Church, c1911. The old church still has a religious function, it is now Central Mosque Wembley. Having been vacant for many years the Presbytarian Church was converted into a mosque in the mid 1990s. Interestingly, the building next door looks very middle-eastern with its domes. It is now the Muslim Welfare Association. Postcard by Young and Co of Teddington. Click the postcard to enlarge.

London, Switchboard Operators, c1920

London, Switchboard Operators, circa 1920. This week's Sepia Saturday blog posting is about switchboard operators. I couldn't resist posting this postcard from my collection. This postcard was written by the lady on the second left of the picture. My transcription of the text on the back of the postcard is below. Postcard by the Grafton Reproduction Co. of 291 Lavender Hill, Clapham, London SW11.

'Dear G (or S or something else)

What do you think of this? The official photographers have been paying us a visit. I was coaching a learner at the time but you see she has moved. I suppose I shall have a letter from you some day. There is no harm in waiting. I heard from Peggy two weeks ago, she said they hadn't heard from you for ages. Hope you are fit. *name illegible*'

Chatham, Kent, Film Promotion Postcards c1931

Chatham, Kent, Film Promotion Postcards c1931. This is a postcard showing a promotion for the 1931 film 'The Champ' starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, which was showing at the Picture House, Chatham. It was taken just next to Chatham railway station. Obviously, that's not the real Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper being carried aloft. The men doing the carrying don't seem to be too pleased.

Below the Google Street View showing Chatham station today is another postcard from Chatham, this time promoting the 1931 film 'Penrod and Sam', starring Leon Janne and Frank Coghlan Jr. I haven't managed to find the location of this one on Google Street View, perhaps an eagle-eyed reader can assist.

A Dozen Unlocated Shop Postcards

Postcard showing people with Edwardian Hats c1910

The theme for this week's Sepia Saturday blog is 'hats', so I thought I'd show this postcard from my collection. It has a Tooting postmark (South London). I have no idea who the people are, where they are or what they are doing. I think they may be by a river, waiting for a boat to take them somewhere. There are boxes stacked up next to them, at least one of them containing vintage wine. A typical view of Edwardian hats is on display. From left, a flat cap, a boater and a homburg. The ladies sport the elaborate hats of the era. Click the postcard to enlarge.

Sipson, Middlesex, c1920

Sipson, Middlesex, circa 1920. The pub shown is the King William IV, a Grade II listed building built in the late mediaeval period. The whole of the village of Sipson, including this pub, was to have been demolished for the proposed expansion and third runway for Heathrow Airport. This was cancelled but the need for more air capacity in London means that Sipson and surrounding villages are constantly under threat. On the Google Street View you can see a banner that reads 'BAA don't bully Sipson families for profit'. BAA is the British Airports Authority.
The buildings on the right on the postcard have long since gone, in fact the pub is the only old building in the postcard that has survived. The building on the far right was a coffee shop - 'The Welcome Coffee Tavern', the building in the middle right may have been a shop. The Horse and Cart is from Ashby's Stores. The postcard was published by E.H.&S. of Yiewsley. Click the postcard to enlarge.

City of London, King William Statue and Eastcheap c1913

City of London, King William Statue and Eastcheap circa 1913. In this animated postcard by the publishers C. & A. G. Lewis of Nottingham we can see the King William IV statue that was erected in 1844. The statue faced London Bridge. The statue was moved to King William Walk, Greenwich Park in 1938. It now stands on a far less impressive plinth. In the distance on the left we can see Eastcheap. Unfortunately only one building from the postcard's time has survived into the 21st century - the domed building in the middle distance directly above the rear part of the bus on the left. This bus is on its way to Croydon from Liverpool Street. The bus on the right has come from Ealing and is nearly at its destination, London Bridge Station, just over the river. Behind the statue is one of the entrances to Monument Underground station. For a couple of other views of the King William IV statue and this area have a look at this earlier post. Postcards by C. & A. G. Lewis are often of the highest quality and are very collectable. This one is no exception. I am particularly struck by the woman on the extreme left of the picture and the old man wearing a boater talking to a policeman on the right. This postcard has been scanned at 300dpi (1575 x 988 pixels) so it may be worth downloading to your computer to see all of the detail. Holborn, London c1910

Holborn, London circa 1910. For some reason the publisher has attempted to make this scene look busier than it actually was - the car in the centre of the postcard has been crudely grafted onto the picture and a shadow has been painted underneath it. The scene was already very busy and I can't think what benefit this would have achieved. Everything else in the photo appears to be correct. Perhaps it is there to cover up a blemish on the negative. Postcard by W. H. Smiths in their 'Kingsway' series. Click the postcard to enlarge.
