Surbiton, Surrey, The Broadway 1913

Surbiton, Surrey, The Broadway 1913. The architecture and character of Surbiton's main shopping street has changed little in the last hundred years. More traffic of course, but it still has a pleasant, unpretentious feel to it. Postcard by W. H. Applebee of Ashford. Click the postcard to enlarge.

Ps, a big hello to visitors who've arrived here from The Atlantic Cities!

  1. Again my favorite is the older version, even the trees seem more shapely! Amazing how so much stays the same!

  2. Perhaps because of the trees, this street seems more sophisticated and planned than the other vintage cards. I wish we could see how much color was on the shop decorations. And congratulations, Howard, on a the great feature at the Atlantic.

  3. So much character in 1913, the parade of shops looks so interesting, I do wish however that the photographer had captured all of the lady with the pram.
